I originally posted this on my Facebook page. I decided to share this with those of you who have wondered “WTF?” in regard to the lack of blog activity. This is a hint as to why … 😉

I have not fallen off the planet. The third installment of The Specialists is on the way. More after that.

A quick update today since it was… “forgotten,” yeah let’s go with “forgotten,” last week. “The Specialists: Rogue” continues its inevitable march to completion. The outline for number four in the series is nearing completion and possible titles are being bandied about.

With the cancellation of the novella project previously known as the “Untitled Contemporary Fiction Project,” I have been trying to decide what to move to after the fourth “The Specialists” and the premier of the “Untitled Science-Fiction Project 1.” “Untitled Science-Fiction Project 2” was the leading candidate but I am starting to think I want to do something else between the two previously planned science-fiction projects. Nothing definitive yet but I thought I’d let you know the mind is in predator mode… it is hunting.

If there is one thing I have learned, it is that I am lousy at estimates… and numbers. The proof of this is in this week’s estimate for “The Specialists: Rogue.” A lot of pages have been created since the last update and you would not know that by looking at the estimate below. Why? Like I said, I am lousy at estimates and numbers. As those pages kept coming I realized “Rogue” was going to be longer than my original estimate and longer than my revised estimate. I am now using my revised revised estimate. However, if I am able to keep the pace of the last two weeks, “Rogue” could be completed in two to three weeks… maybe. What can I say? I write ’em as I see ’em.

Yes, late again. Various causes/reasons/excuses. I will not bore you with the details.

As stated in the last update the “Untitled Contemporary Fiction Project” is dead. That decision has not changed. I will drop it from the progress report in the next week or so.

It appears I may have to change my progress meter selection. The one I have been using does not seem to want to work when I do. So, I am… experimenting. 😉

As I sit down in front of the computer for the evening/morning writing session, it occurs to me that I should update everyone on my status.

Yeah, yeah, I know. It is late… very late if you count the fact that I did not post an update at all last week.

Now, a bit of news. “The Specialists #4” has been moved up and placed on the production board. I decided I wanted to do the fourth “The Specialists” story before I began work on the previously scheduled “Untitled Science-Fiction Project #1” which does, in fact, have a title… I’m just not telling. “The Specialists 4” outline and storyline have come together very easily the past two weeks and I decided I was in the mood to go with it early even though I don’t have a title for it yet.

Finally, for all practical purposes the “Untitled Contemporary Fiction Project” has been shelved. I didn’t like it. 😉

And so it goes…

The Specialists: Rogue (a.k.a. The Specialists #3)

The Specialists #4: Untitled

Okay, the BAD news is that “Rogue” is obviously not as near completion as what the previous numbers indicated. I was aware of that… and I made you aware of that. The GOOD news is that I believe the new estimate is accurate. And so the story goes…

98% complete? Not bloody likely. As I said last week, I am trying to get a handle on a more accurate estimate. 98% ain’t it. If I had to guess, I would say I am more likely in the 80% to 85% area. I might be able to be a bit more accurate after this week. Of course, it would help if the characters would just do what they’re supposed to do!

Also, I had planned on beginning the actual placing of words to paper on “Untitled Science-Fiction Project #1” last week. That didn’t happen. That will not happen until “The Specialists: Rogue” is complete… maybe.

I will be trying to get a handle on a more honest estimate of where we stand on completing “The Specialists: Rogue.” 92% complete is optimistic… to say the least. However, based on my original target that is where we are at. I am lousy at setting targets. I do a rough outline of the plot and base my target length on that. I was pretty close on “The Specialists: At Any Cost” and “The Specialists: Sex, Spies and Lies.” Those were much easier to estimate since they were adaptations of previous versions. I am also a victim of character rebellion. I do the rough outline, make my estimate and start writing. Then the characters take over. They move the plot. I tell the story as it unfolds. I do not force it. I do not pad it. I do not prematurely clip it. I simply tell it… and get in trouble with grossly inaccurate estimates of length and completion deadlines. This is literary Hell. I love it.
